ARMA-museum From the Monkey Forest you can head
over to the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA). This beautifully set
museum exhibits a wide range of Balinese paintings from the past
till present. Here you are can see the many different styles of
art in Bali and their changes through time.
Neka Gallery – The oldest and probably most famous gallery
in Ubud. This gallery has selected paintings from many different
artists (both Balinese and Foreign) that have been inspired by the
natural beauty, people and culture of Bali.
Komaneka Gallery - focuses on contemporary paintings
by young modern Balinese artists. Located on the bustling Monkey
Forest Road is a modern, two-story sanctuary of white stucco, marble,
dark wood and long vertical windows. The structure is designed to
accommodate the often large canvases typical of contemporary work.
Display is key and Koman has spent much time placing paintings so
that light and position are ideal.
Sika Gallery - The artist-run Sika Gallery in
Campuan, Ubud, is probably one of the foremost galleries in Indonesia
dealing with the avant garde. Condemning modem commercial art as
"too sweet, like candy" artist curator I Wayan Sika and
his contemporaries of the Sanggar Dewata Artist Association stated
aim is to push the visual arts envelope.
There are many other galleries, both small and individual or large
and well known, and so if you really want to find out more about
Balinese art and artists there are many dedicated websites including
